As an Android fan and a person that helps co-workers set up their Android phones, I can tell you first hand, that Android fragmentation is real and it is bodering on insane. I have three friends, each with Android phones from Sprint, but all three phones are from different manufacturers. The differences between these phones make no sense and make setup and usability very difficult.
As a quick example, two of the phones have the Google Calendar, the third does not. So when setting up these phones to work with Google Apps, two of the phones could see our Apps Calendar, one could not. You would think that since all three phones are Android all three would work the same, think again.
My complaining aside, this article provides some hope regarding this issue and helps to explain the path that Google is headed down.
