ndis.sys Error When Booting Windows 7

I just finished working on a laptop that would blue screen just after the Windows splash screen.  Each time the bsod would appear, it would mention the ndis.sys file.

And booting into safe mode with networking mode would freeze at 'AtiPcie.sys'

After running SpinRite and doing some research, I booted into Safe Mode (without networking) and proceeded to update the Network and chipset drivers.  I rebooted the PC and this time it did not blue screen.

I also noticed something else, the program 'Driver Detective' was installed on the laptop.  Now, I don't know if that application caused the issue, but it wouldn't be the first time I saw a PC with driver issues and that application installed.
